Operating a robot in tight spaces is not as easy as it seems, especially when you have to utilize creative sophisticated motions to get the gears to mesh. In this small assembly (about 3 inches in diameter) multiple gears have to be inserted in the proper bearing bosses in a specific order and such that all of the gears mesh properly and the assembly will pass the next station on the dial which actually checks to see that the gear box performs as required. Vision is used to validate that all of the needed parts are in place prior to assembly and a laser gear tooth sensor is used as the finished gear box is put under torque and tested for operation. This station, fits in 1 sq meter and has been in operation for 5 years. Recently, it was upgraded to heat stake the top and bottom plate together so that the assembly will take the stresses of mishandling in its insertion into the next level metering control.
